Atima Omara is a recognized leader and speaker on engaging youth, women, and people of color in the political process. She is the first African American and the fifth woman president of the Young Democrats of America (YDA). She oversees the day-to-day operations, fundraising, and strategic planning of an organization with 150,000 members, 46 state chapters, and over 2300 local chapters. As president, she also sits on the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) Executive Committee and was recently asked to serve as Secretary of the DNC Youth Council. She has received numerous awards including Jet Magazine’s 2013 “40 under 40” and Ebony Magazine’s 2013 “Power 100”. Her writings on these and other progressive topics have been featured at the Huffington Post, Ms. Magazine, Women’s Enews, RH Reality Check, Fem2pt0, and the Shriver Report.

She has been profiled and quoted in a number of news outlets including: the Washington Post, BBC America, Fox News, Russia Today (RT) to discuss the youth vote and the national elections respectively. She is also a 2010 graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership in Virginia and a 2014 graduate of Leadership Arlington. Outside of the Young Democrats of America, Omara is an active member of local, state, and national women’s organizations as a board member of Emerge Virginia and Planned Parenthood Metro Washington. She has also served in the leadership with organizations such as the National Organization for Women, Arlington County Commission on the Status of Women, and DC’s Women’s Information Network. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in American Studies and Foreign Affairs and received a Masters Degree in Public Administration at George Mason University in Virginia.
